PETER GREEN- Heavy Heart

Before the ladies joined, Fleetwood Mac was a kick ass heavy blues band with one of the best, if not the best, English blues players at the time, Peter Green.  He had an amazing guitar tone and as the band went on, a real talent for writing unusual and experimental blues based songs.

At a certain point he got burnt out with the music biz and left Fleetwood Mac, some say heavy drug use played a major part in his deteriorating mental ability to cope with being in a famous, heavily touring band. He definitely looks a little fried in this video.

This song is from his first solo album after leaving FM and epitomizes what he was trying to do to create a new urban blues sound.  Its sparse and tribal sounding and kinda creeps me out, but in a good way. I like that he turns the wah effect on his guitar on for the first time about 3 seconds before the song ends.

MIKE PINERA & TED NUGENT JAM

This is hard to pull off- a guitar only jam with no other instruments.  According to the youtube comments this is from a local Florida station TV broadcast when the Nuge was still in The Amboy Dukes and Mike Pinera was the new guitarist in Iron Butterfly.

THIN LIZZY- Don't Believe A Word

OK, so technically this isn't Thin Lizzy, its a side project supergroup with two members of Thin Lizzy (Phil Lynott and Scott Gorman) plus Gary Moore, drummer Cozy Powell, and a keyboard player I've never seen before. I think the band was a short lived collaboration while Lizzy was taking a break just after recording Black Rose.

Such a great performance though, Gary Moore is so good in this.  I think he's playing Peter Green's Les Paul that Green gave to Moore after losing his mind and leaving Fleetwood Mac [see post above].  Stick with it because at 2:48 the song morphs into a proto-metal dual lead guitar onslaught with the tightest ending of any song I've ever heard.

ROSE TATTOO- Rock N Roll Outlaw

I remember seeing Rose Tattoo tattoos and painted jean jackets growing up in Fayetteville, NC. I never checked them out cause all the dudes who were into them seemed to be either GIs or bikers... I should have known that meant they're awesome.

Kinda like ACDC (from Australia as well and shared drummer Phil Rudd with ACDC for a minute) Rose Tattoo has a more bluesy/Stones vibe, I guess mainly because of the great slide guitar that is in most of their songs.

Check out this video for "Rock N Roll Outlaw".  Super low budget, tough looking chicks and bad lip-syncing but I've never seen a band rock so hard in a room with just two potted plants. At 1:20 notice the nasty lip lick, yikes!
